Chesterfield County, Virginia is set to experience a significant change on Powhite Parkway. The tolls are soon to become 75 cents cheaper, bringing relief to commuters and residents alike. This development was announced by County Administrator Dr. Joseph Casey during the State of the County Address.

Background and Promise

VDOT and the county made a commitment years ago that once the bonds from the original construction of the Powhite Parkway Extension were paid off by those using the road, the tolls would come down. As of October 2024, the remaining balance stood at .9 million. VDOT officials anticipate having the toll reduced by late 2026 or early 2027. This is a major step towards making travel on Powhite Parkway more affordable.For driver Jenna Adkins, going down Powhite has always been a pricey affair. She often takes back roads instead and has learned the routes to avoid the tolls. Although it takes a bit longer, she sees the value in saving money. She said, "It's just to do for me, at least personally, so I actually take back roads, and I've learned the routes of backroads instead. And it takes a little longer, but I get there, you know." However, she also expressed excitement about the possibility of lower tolls, stating, "It's funny because I am always like, 'wish I could take the Powhite,' but I can't, but if the tolls had lessened, absolutely I would."

Impact on EZ Pass Users

Melissa Farber is looking forward to seeing a decrease in her EZ Pass bill. She understands that even small savings can add up and can be used for other things. She said, "It adds up, even if you can just get an extra cup of coffee or something out, so sure, more money in the pocket, always a good thing." The reduction in tolls will have a positive impact on the wallets of many EZ Pass users.

Phase One of the Project

The county is currently in the first phase of the Powhite Parkway Extension project. This nearly two-and-a-half-mile project aims to widen the last portion of the parkway from two lanes to four and extend it from Route 288 to Woolridge Road. County leaders believe that this will help distribute traffic evenly and improve the overall flow of traffic on the parkway.
