Feeding the Nation: The Ripple Effects of Immigration and Trade Policies on America's Food Supply
As Americans grappled with the rising cost of groceries, they turned to the ballot box seeking solutions. However, the policies proposed by the incoming administration could inadvertently exacerbate the very problem they aim to solve, leading to even higher food prices across the nation.

Uncovering the Unintended Consequences of Policy Decisions

The Labor Crunch: Deporting Undocumented Workers Could Devastate Agriculture

The American agricultural system relies heavily on undocumented immigrant labor, with estimates suggesting that between 40 and 50 percent of the workforce responsible for planting crops and harvesting fruit could be deported under the new administration's proposed policies. This labor shortage would inevitably lead to higher wages, which would then be passed on to consumers in the form of skyrocketing produce prices. Crops that are the most labor-intensive to harvest, such as strawberries, mushrooms, and cherries, would likely see the sharpest price increases. The impact would extend beyond just fruits and vegetables, as the dairy and meat industries have also grappled with labor shortages in recent years. Eliminating immigrant workers from these sectors could reduce production, force farms out of business, and drive up the cost of milk, cheese, and other animal-based products by as much as 90 percent.

Tariffs and Trade Barriers: Imported Goods Become Costlier

Approximately 15 percent of the American food supply is imported, including a significant portion of the fresh fruit, seafood, and other specialty items that have become staples in many households. The proposed tariffs on these imported goods, ranging from 10 to 100 percent, would directly translate to higher prices for consumers. This would be especially true in the short term, as domestic production struggles to ramp up to meet the demand. The impact of these trade barriers would be compounded by the simultaneous loss of undocumented immigrant labor, as there would be no easy way to make up for the shortfall in domestic production. "There's no safety valve," warned Marcus Noland, the executive vice president and director of studies at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. "If you start deporting people, it's not like you can import the product and make up for it if you have these tariffs."

Ripple Effects Throughout the Food Supply Chain

The consequences of the proposed immigration and trade policies would not be limited to the farm gate. Undocumented workers are also a crucial part of the food processing, distribution, and service industries, from poultry plants to local eateries. The restaurant sector, which employs over 800,000 undocumented immigrants, is already struggling to fill positions, and even a small reduction in the workforce would drive up operating costs and lead to higher menu prices.Ultimately, the impact of these policies would be felt across the entire food ecosystem, from the snacks we buy at the grocery store to the meals we order at restaurants. As people continue to spend a larger portion of their budgets on sustenance, the promised economic relief may prove elusive, leaving many Americans feeling the pinch of higher food costs for years to come.
